It is observed that during the file transfer being carried on over a ProFTP server there are occasions where you find your session being timed out.

This may vary with different FTP clients depending on their ability to stay connected. However it is better to modify ProFTP in order to allow the timeout to be maximum. This maybe problem in respect of security but required in case of some FTP clients which are facing frequent timeouts.

All you need to do is modify the TimeoutNoTransfer directive in proftpd. This directive defines maximum number of seconds a client is allowed to spend connected, after authentication, without issuing a command which results in creating an active or passive data connection (i.e. sending/receiving a file, or receiving a directory listing).

You need to modify this value in /etc/proftpd.conf file and find for TimeoutNoTransfer directive. Once found change it's value from default 300 to 1200:
Code:
TimeoutNoTransfer 1200

Once done, save the file and exit.

Finally restart the proftpd (ProFTP) on the server.
Quote:
[[email protected] ~]# /etc/init.d/proftpd restart
